Frog Stew & Delilah

Have you heard of the parable of frog stew? Here’s the story:

If you place a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will immediately try to jump out because it senses the extreme heat. However, if you place the frog in a pot of cool water and then slowly heat it up, the frog will not perceive the gradual increase in temperature and will eventually be cooked to death.

The parable is used to highlight the danger of complacency in the face of slow and incremental changes, whether in personal habits, social norms, or environmental conditions. It suggests that people should remain vigilant and responsive to gradual changes that could ultimately lead to harmful consequences.

Insert Delilah:

Once upon a time, there was a young mother-to-be named Delilah. Delilah was thirty years old, head first in with holistic practices, and passionate about bringing her first child into the world through a natural, physiologic home birth. She had spent countless hours researching (primarily on Instagram), following accounts of midwives, doulas, and witnessing/connecting with mothers who shared her vision.

She decided to participate in dual-care, some ultrasounds alongside her Midwife’s expertise. One day, during a routine prenatal check-up, Delilah's doctor suggested she attend a birthing class at the local hospital. "Just to be prepared," they said. Wanting to ensure she was well-informed, Delilah agreed. The class was informative, and the hospital staff seemed caring and knowledgeable. They spoke of the benefits of hospital births—the advanced technology, the skilled professionals, the safety net of medical interventions.

Over time, Delilah found herself and her husband attending more hospital-recommended classes and fewer of her beloved natural birthing workshops. Each class subtly emphasized the risks of home birth and the security of hospital deliveries. The language was gentle, the persuasion gradual. Delilah's and her husband’s confidence in her home birth plan began to waver (unconsciously), just a little.

When Delilah reached her third trimester, the Midwife recommended a series of tests and procedures “just to be on the safe side.” They were framed as minor precautions, each one seemingly innocuous. Some blood work. Some doppler fetal monitoring would ensure the baby’s safety. IF there was a need, she would be able to transfer because she’s been under dual-care. If anything were to happen, an epidural is an option, it would make the process smoother, and that induction could be utilized to fit her convenience.

Delilah, wanting the best for her baby, agreed to each step, reassured by the “medical” “experts.” The water in her metaphorical pot was heating up, but so gradually that she didn’t notice the warmth turning into a simmer.

The day of her intense contractions arrived, and she labored. And labored. And labored. Her midwife had been with her for 48 hours. Her strength and confidence dwindling. Her husband speaks up and says, “honey, the guys at the hospital know what they’re doing. You don’t have to be a superhero. Let them help you.”

Soon, Delilah found herself in a hospital bed, surrounded by beeping machines and a team of doctors and nurses. The birth she had envisioned—physiologic, natural, serene, in the warmth of her own home—was a distant memory. The interventions led to stronger, more painful contractions, which led to medication and she began to lose consciousness, which then led to more interventions.

Before she knew it, her labor was directed by the clock and the hospital protocols rather than her body’s natural rhythms. She was in the “emergency” sphere of birthing. On a table being cut open. In the midst of it all, she felt detached, as if the birth was happening to her rather than through her.

When Delilah finally held her baby, a wave of love washed over her. But alongside that joy was a bittersweet realization. The birth she had dreamed of had slipped away, bit by bit, intervention by intervention. She had handed over her power, and with it, the birth she truly desired.

This is a spin on the parable of frog stew.. however, the amount of women I’ve heard recount a story exactly like Delilah’s, blows me away. This parable teaches us that gradual, seemingly benign environments, “experts,” protocols, and changes can lead us far from our original path. In the context of the industrial medical complex and birth, it reminds us to GET CLEAR on what we want. To stay vigilant to anything that isn’t bring that into our path, to trust our instincts, and to hold fast to our desires. Each small concession, each surrender of control, can slowly erode the birth experience we seek.

Delilah's story is a call to all expecting mothers to remain true to their vision, to question the necessity of anything not in full alignment and to reclaim their power our body’s were gifting in the birthing process.

Keep your Baby Thriving after Seeing a Chiropractor - 3 Holistic Ways

Hey fellow mamas on the sweet journey of nurturing the beginnings our little ones’ lives, here are a few practices we often suggest to client at Living Adjusted. These holistic practices to bring home movement, loving touch, and embrace nature & the environment around us.

Encourage Movement: Liberate your babies from containers and cribs. Embrace the freedom of the ground space—whether it’s a cozy corner in the kitchen or near the bed. Allow your baby to explore, roll, and wiggle freely. Remember, every roll, every breath is a neurological symphony for them. We’ve introduced a sheepskin for our baby—a soft space where he can engage with us at his level, allowing a continuous dance of movement as we carry on with our chores or tasks. Or engage in consistent baby wearing. When they're your body, soaking in the world, they absorb every single one of our movements. This is the perfect way for their brain to bring in proprioceptive information about where they are in time and space. Your breath is synchronizing. There’s temperature regulation. The benefits are endless.

Hands-On Engagement: The caregiver’s touch is massively therapeutic. More healing that anyone else’s hands on your baby. When we’re at home with our little one, I’m constantly moving his body, noticing where he’s moving or not moving, holding him and informing his tissues. We invite mamas to feel for any tensions or constraints; gently massage and soothe those areas. Observe how they use their limbs, move their head, or even breathe. Babies are mirrors—they reflect our movements, thoughts, and even speech cadence. As mamas, we set their landscape. We set the tone of our environment for the whole. By tuning in to their movements, we often become more aware of our own.

Embrace Sunlight: Sunshine is not just warmth; it’s a vital component for growth. The impact to of the sun is becoming more available due to the increase in interest in quantum biology. We can think of our babies similar to plants, needing the earth and sky to flourish. So step outside! Often! Cold climates, too, offer benefits when we learn to harness their potential for our mitochondrial health. Make nature a part of your daily routine. Begin orienting your days around your time in nature or outside. It’s like a massive charge for our body’s batteries, continuing the “opening work” that has happened beneath the hands of your bodyworker.

Our babies are sponges, absorbing not just breastmilk and love, but also our movements, environment, and connection with nature. To continue assisting our babies in their creation of space, make their home an environment that fosters growth, movement, and an embrace of the nature. Here’s to nurturing our little ones the ways our ancestors did.

Creating Body Literacy with Elimination Communication

Elimination Communication (EC) — is defined as a way to respond to a baby's natural hygiene needs, from as early as birth. This practice isn't solely about "catching" every pee or poo in the potty or being diaper free all the time; it's a dance of connection with our bodies. It literally sets up your child’s neural pathways to understand what’s happening when they’re needing to go poo or pee.

We began using the Elimination Communication (EC) method along with cloth diapering (80/20 rule) on week 5 of Ku’a’s life. We did not do a ton of research besides watching a few YouTube videos with Andrea Olsen of “Go Diaper Free” and purchasing one item to get us started. A friend of ours had flown over to come to help out on week four and she asked why we hadn’t gotten the “top hat” potty out yet. I mentioned not knowing where to start with EC. She said, “you only need to begin with the ‘Pottytunities.’”

There were a host of reasons we considered putting in the extra effort to make EC a priority. The first of which made sense to us to begin doing the things he would be doing eventually anyway. It’s a strange reality that the western culture has indoctrinated in us this idea of teaching your babies for 2-3 years to eliminate in these paper coverings on their bottoms, and stay in it until they’re changed. And then all of a sudden begin asking them to go on the toilet when mom and dad feel ready. And those times during the transition period of toilet training, any of the misses being called “accidents.” Which was really what we had trained them for in the first place? It made more sense to us to go in the direction of development we are headed towards, from the beginning. It feels a lot like what we see in the medical industrial complex propaganda. “Take this birth control pill for years, telling your body not to be fertile, then when you’re ready to have a baby you can quit taking it and become pregnant.” We all know it’s not always this easy after years of training our body to do something completely opposite. Obviously this isn’t the exact same scenario, but we can extract similar themes here.

My husband and I also see this “method” as an extremely natural way to be with our babe. It’s a way to be in tune with your child’s signaling. Much of the way my husband and I are moving towards living (holistic, instinctually, communally) has been marketed out of us. By large companies with skin in the game and a nice agenda to make a product provide a level of convenience that seems unlivable without (like the diaper).

Elimination communication does require a higher level of awareness. There have been times we have been occupied with switching the laundry, packing the bag, or scrolling on our phones, while Ku’a is signaling in our arms that he has to pee. And then he lets out a cry, we check his diaper and we missed the window to put him on the potty.  It is weirdly rewarding to “catch” poos and pees in the tophat. Pieces of me love the accomplishment hit we receive when we “get it right.” (Very few things in motherhood are direct reward like this so let me have my moment, haha).

There are some interesting facts on the world of potty training and the evolution of disposable diapering in general that caught our attention. Half of the world’s population is potty trained by one year old. In western culture, many three year olds are still in diapers, at least throughout the night. It’s interesting that disposable diapers were not even an option for mothers until the 1960’s. That’s just our parents generation and ours. Before diapering this way, parents taught their children from a young age to know where to go to the bathroom. And for the in-between times, they had cloth-like coverings as “diapers,” however, they were used as a back up to the times they missed the cues for eliminating. Not in replacement of the toilet. Obviously culture shifts rapidly. Just a generation or two of convenience, shifts infants from potty literacy to eliminating in their diapers for years.

EC is sort of like “training” a puppy. You take them out when you’re about to leave the house, when you get home, before they go to sleep and after they eat. An extra step that creates an entirely different (and IMO more humane) experience for our babies. We’ll see how it goes with our next babies when we have multiple children on the scene. Our intention is to simply make it apart of our life. Communicating their potty needs just like the rest. More updates on this in the coming years.

Mastery to Mystery

Chiropractors: Unlocking the Mastery Mystery

There’s a movement within the world, within the healing arts, namely within the chiropractic profession. Maybe it’s something that has always been present, and just recently revealing itself in its fullest vulnerability. An opportunity, really. A chance to eliminate hypocrisy. To step into all that our founders called us to be.

From the seat I’ve assumed, relatively new to the indoctrination of the chiropractic philosophy, art and science, the last year and a half served as a sort of elimination. An unlearning you could say, from the systemic forces at play. On a microscopic and macroscopic level. And a  “weeding out” is occurring, of those that fully trust in that tiny rivulet of force that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells and stirs them into life. That theology that BJ so beautiful articulated.

There is talk in the Palmer’s writings of which master we will serve. “You cannot serve two masters.” These recent seasons serving as a front row seat, bearing witness to where our ultimate servitude lies. Within the intricacies of the human design? Within the foundational concepts from which chiropractic was birthed from? Or within the policies of protection? The governance? With technology or humanness? Within a mask mandate or a vaccination?

If we truly study the roots of our profession, the first bearded men gifted us this “thing” to uncover the mysteries of life. Not to master things — viruses, professions, concepts, origins of dis-ease. Rather reflect on the origins. Piecing together the threads woven through history, throughout our DNA. Finding their connection. Embodying this connection.

As a whole, the chiropractic profession has turned towards this desire to conquer subluxation, to discover the mastery of the adjusting art, to expand our reach beyond the 1% of the population that receives care.

How could we serve the world if we simply dropped that? Turned back to the mystery of the tiny rivulet of information that animates the living world. What if we chose to sit with the intelligence. Choose to honor that intelligence? Would your practice look different? How would the application of the adjusting change? What shift would happen internally, if we chose to sit with the mystery, instead of master the majority?

There’s a new trend in chiropractic claiming to be “holistic,” but still we witness the use of hand sanitizer and masks to make people feel comfortable. In the past I may have thought, it will take a strong individual to stand with roots that grow deep amongst trees that appear tall with limbs that are blown and tossed by the wind. But after witnessing this recent season of pandemonium, I operate within the framework that it will take a CLEAR individual. A tree that knows the foundational elements, the root system, is what sustains.

Regardless of where your loyalty has been laid, my hope is that this serves not as a judgment, merely a point of reflection. A prompt, an enticement, to clear out concepts that may be hidden within the trunk you’ve shoved in the basement. An opportunity to lean into the mystery instead of playing into the egoic mastery.  A chance to pause and ask “Do I have the clarity required to guard the sacred trust DD so diligently gifted me?”

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I’ll take this “pandemic time” as the beginning of a massive teaching thread. Moving our communities from looking outside of ourselves to reflecting within. From seeking knowledge to wisdom. From a reaching for curing to a desire for caring. From mastery to mystery.

Interference

Inter [Enter] - Fere [Fear] - The entrance of fear

We’re swimming in a sea of interference. In birth, in governance, in medical choice, in our food system, with non native EMF’s inundation, with our media outlets, all of it — entrance of fear. Manipulation. Control. The English language give multiple definitions of interference: one being the obstruction or blocking of and another referring to the meeting of two wave trains (as of light or sound) that constitutes alternating areas of increased and decreased amplitude. A dissonance. Incoherence.

Recently, I stumbled across a study in NIH on the use of Pitocin in labor. “Due to its potent effects on social behavior, including maternal behavior, oxytocin has been identified as a potential mediator of postpartum depression and anxiety.”

The design of Pitocin is to mimic our original instructions for oxytocin — a hormone mediated response that vasodilator or vasoontricts depending on organ need, but in and around birth and labor, contracts the myoepithelial layer of cells in smooth muscle tissue (ie contraction of the uterus during birth as baby descends and directly postpartum as uterus returns to a designated size).

What we’re actually witnessing with the use of “Pit,” as many medical providers refer to it, is an increase in depression and anxiety immediately following birth in Mama’s that have agreed to receive this drug.

This is one simple example of the dissonance we’re experiencing, and that many families haven’t come to the realization of. As many birthing individuals are somewhat coerced into using such drug, without proper informed consent. And what’s the fix if we see this likely outcome post Pitocin usage? More drugs. More incoherence. More disconnect.

There’s a bigger question at play. It’s a systemic issue. Where does the interface begin? Where is the first entrance of fear? And how do we mitigate opportunities for this cycle to continue?

A counterfeit will never be the real thing. Settling for Pitocin vs creating an oxytocin heightened environment. Trading bigger, more beautiful, GMO, potentially cheaper food, for locally grown. Keeping quiet to stay comfortable and “safe” instead of imploring boldness and risk for freedom. Exchanging love for fear. Exchanging sense of safety of an experience instead of strength in an opportunity of transformation.

We’ve taken birth out of the home and into the hospital, enter fear. Then we take the sanctity and power of birth away from mothers. Over 33% of the time birth is transitioned out of the vagina and under control of a sacapel, enter fear. More recently, we’re taking life creation out of the bedroom and into a petri dish. How far will we let fear penetrate? What will it take to reverse the waves and bring coherence?

Many midwives say, peace on earth begins with peace at birth. Many issues could be solved by choosing to educate women on the power of their body. Let’s change the way we bring new life into this world and observe the transformation. End fear. End interference.

(d)Evolution

An article  was posted relatively recently from CNBC detailing a plan from company BiomilQ to reproduce mother’s breast milk. In a lab. From cultured Mammary gland epithelial cells.

Half of those reading this will think, “wow, what an incredible feat.” And the other half will be questioning why this is necessary. Unfortunately, reading this headline didn’t shock me, more so tugged at a small thread of anger building in my womb space. A desire for more Mamas to wake up, come out of the fog. For more Mama’s to ask questions. To look inside. To truly reflect on what we are moving towards as a whole.

The DEvolution process, it happened slowly at first. We  began questioning the innate responses of mothers. Wondering if they were strong enough to be the care taker and the homesteader and the factory worker. We questioned the tinctures, the wise mother’s hacks, knowledge passed down ancestrally. We said, let’s progress this way. The first outsource to the man in a white coat.

Then the collective was taught to trust the convenience and safety of the powers at be, to feed our children. From dyes, to preservatives, to everything toxic added in between, we’ve seen the rates of cancer, autoimmune diseases, infertility and SO MUCH more increase at it’s introduction. We’ve taken the food from the hands of the mothers in the garden to the food scientists. Is bigger, genetically modified, less nutritionally valued, better?

Then we began wondering, not only if we were capable enough to care for our children, but capable enough to birth them. Another outsource. Babies began getting cut out in what was called twilight birth. A “safer,” more effective option. Then the idea was suggested that we weren’t in tune enough to carry children in our bellies without help. Hence witnessing the management of prenatal care through radiating pictures, medication and blood work.

It doesn’t stop there. We began wondering why this type of lifestyle isn’t conducive for conception. So we began outsourcing that, watching fertility clinics pop up all over the world. Taking the creation of life from the bed room into a petri dish. Where’s the spark of life in that?

And here we are watching our children change. I’d like to make the argument that change is inevitable. It’s the TYPE of change we’re seeing — losing the qualities that make us humans, HUMANS. The spark. The spirit. Replaced with systems, procedures and reproducibility. The REVOLUTION has begun for some of us.

The idea that mom’s are losing the ability to breast feed, relying on formula, having lost the ability to bring life earth side in the same space it was created from, is utterly appalling. The idea that $3.5 million are allocated to RECREATING something that we’re losing the ability to create, shows all things that are wrong with this world. Funnel the money into opening these children up. Opening these mothers up. Waking all of us up, to the new (ancient technology) all around us. Residing withIN us.

When you live close to nature, physiologic processes happen NATURALLY.  The need for disturbance and interference is radically reduces. And when you dedicate to a life undisturbed, have an undisturbed birth, in your own under your own level of direction, you're running on your instinctual responses. These are the original directions that were gifted to each of us. The directions that grow a liver cell from the eggs you have for breakfast from the chickens in the backyard.

It’s going to take a bigger portion of us acting on these instinctual responses to curve the devolution we’re seeing. Begin acting on your instinctual responses, again. Make it a practice. In small ways. They don’t come from ordinary reality. They don't come from the thinking mind. They come from feeling places, knowing places. Those places are withIN you and me.

EVOLUTION or REVOLUTION.

The Lies That Bind

Trigger Warning: This is likely to challenge commonly held beliefs and could offend your ego. Deep breath.

You don’t make other people sick.

Nope, not even if you have a certain V that starts with C. The current state of humanity is living in fear. The last 3 years have been chaos. Causing it’s individuals the need to unconsciously and consciously control everyone/ everything around us. The narrative we’re being fed is that each individual is responsible for the health of the collective. And by complying to a set of regulations, keeping distance, vaccinating, etc safety is ensured. I’d like to challenge that held belief (no surprise there). But hear me out…

Let’s think about this in relation to the world of psychology. We can liken it to a scenario you may be familiar with; someone else making you mad. If someone walks up to you and slanders you, your character, or your neighbor in the grocery store isle makes eye contact then avoids you. Immediately the chemistry of our body changes. Our heart rate increases, shoulders rise and the skin on your face flushes. Are they making us feel the emotions of anger? No. Did they force our body chemistry to change? No. It was our choice. Completely our choice of chemistry. What would have happened if you didn’t know who they were? Would your body chemistry have changed the same way? Most of us are under a subconscious hypnosis. Reacting rather than responding. With each reaction, simply childhood wounding at play. Even then, we still have a choice. A choice to take this as a personal offense and react with anger. Or to move forward and take responsibility for what’s ours in a situation.

So what does this have to do with people getting sick?

The founder of chiropractic, DD Palmer, wrote, “If the germ theory were accurate, no one would be around to talk about it.” Big Pharma wants us to believe something else. To follow a “sick culture.” To pay portions of our weekly checks to “sick care” plans that are in place for EMERGENCIES. You wearing a face covering over your mouth cannot protect me. It’s my job to protect me, not yours.

If the conditioning that was shoved down our throat from the time we could talk was about taking responsibility for our health, we would be more consumed with the state of our terrain (internal health) than the pathogens (viruses, bacteria). The internal health is a culmination of balanced chemistry, spirituality, emotional regulation and physical alignment.

These are the lies that bind us. So if we can’t be responsible for others wellbeing, what IS our responsibility? First, lets look at what responsibility actually is.

Responsibility = to take back the ability to respond. As Merriam’s defines, it is the state of being accountable. In the Hawaiian culture, the word for responsibility is Kuleana. It is our duty, our responsibility, what we must do. Referring to each individual’s own values and accountability. Simply put: to take back what is yours.

Okay, so what IS our responsibility? Simply: TO KNOW THYSELF.

There is a Lao Tzu quote, “knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.” To ensure your own health - emotionally, physically, chemically, environmentally. It takes an internal knowledge, and a lot of trust in the creator. It’s the reason airlines tell us every time we’re about to take off, to put your oxygen mask on first. Put yours on, so you can be of service to the collective. To be accountable for how we RESPOND. To move to a place from reacting to responding and becoming conscious of our emotional state.

It is a courageous act to take back our ability to respond.

This lie is binding us. The lie that keeps us in a cultural hypnosis. Keeps us caged up. The lie in a narrative that has completely engulfed a culture. The lie of sick care. It’s hindering the growth of economies, the health of individuals, the connection of communities. What if we don’t participate in the lie? What if we take back our ability to respond? That’s a world I want to live in.

SAFETY + SUPPORT

This august marks one year that I’ve been on island. The island of Maui, the place I’ve made my home. The place that drew me in. The place that welcomed me with open arms.

A few weeks back my landlords asked if I would be renewing my lease.  Upon reflection, it felt candidly obvious to tell them to plan for another year. There is no physical place I’ve lived and felt more safe and supported than the four walls I’m in. It has been a gift to live remote, in a space fully surrounded by plants, where you can walk out the doors and eat from the trees, leave your doors unlocked. A place that so deeply touches you it shifts your internal cyclical nature. A place that depicts the image that comes to mind when you hear the word refuge. Your own personal oasis.

This consideration had me thinking, “isn’t this really what we’re seeking in our bodies as well?”

I recognize my privilege in having space to reflect and share these words. And it’s my prayer that if you’re reading you will find ways to take action in helping your neighbor. It is my prayer that more of us will inhabit a body that we feel safe in. To live in a body that we feel supported in. To be comfortable, at peace in our physical “meat suit.” For this internal safety and supported sense to emanate through our words, actions and ways of being.

NEUROLOGIC SAFETY MAUI CHIRO

Each person that walks through the door at Living Adjusted FWC, on the deepest level, is seeking some sort of embodiment. They’re seeking acknowledgment of inner conflict, or acceptance in the situation going on outside of themselves, safety within this physical, human experience.

I’m not sure what the status of your world is as you’re sitting reading this, but currently in Hawaii, we can’t enter a store without having a mask on. There are glaring yellow signs warning us about the implications for disobeying social distancing guidelines. There are drones flying over the beaches and cops patrolling every other block we seem to travel down. Masks, social distancing, shelters in place, lack of eye contact.. the list goes on.

In light of this season, I felt a nudge to explore what it looks like to truly be SAFE within our bodies. By studying the body on a physical and metaphorical level we gain a better understanding of the whole picture. How can we create safety in a world that continues to change? How can we find neurologic safety and feel supported internally regardless of our external environments? How can we find support in our physical experience under the alienation of sickness and diagnosis?

Stephen Porges coined the term “Polyvagal Theory” and gifted us an outline for physiologic safety through neurology — the vagal nerve specifically. This nerve has branches running from the brain to the heart, lungs and gut as well as to the face (ears, eyes and expression of jaw and voice muscles).

There are three main branches of the vagal nerve.

  • 1. Ventral Vagal (Social Vagus) - allows us to move our eyes, ears, facial muscles and voice. This section is also responsible for processing speech (style and tone), listening and eye contact. These facial and tonal expressions are considered “social engagement.” We’ve all seen the way mothers talk to their babies — with wide mouth, big facial expressions, lots of smiling, lots of laughter, slow, gentle cooing noises. Most of us experience a change in tone of our voice when talking to infants. What do you think happens to our internal state when we approach someone in a mask? We’re losing our initial safety mechanism — facial expression — to gain primal, neurologic feedback on whether we should approach the human (are they safe?) Or avoid that human (they’re a threat).

  • 2. Middle Vagal Branch - This is embedded within the sympathetic system. This portion of the vagal nerve helps coordinates heart rate, gut function and lung capacity. We’ve all heard Walter Cannon’s coined term “fight or flight.” This response ramps our defenses, increasing heart rate, shuttling blood to the arms and legs, priming our lungs with more air and secreting hormones that signal high alert. This occurs when our initial safety mechanism is bypassed (social vagus) putting our bodies in defense. The pace of life has caused many of us to default to this state on a regular basis halting energy expenditure for immune defense, metabolic processes, reproductive processes and digestion leading to an array of chronic issues.

  • 3. Dorsal Vagal - This is where we find ourselves in a dissociative state when the hope of self defense or relational repair is lost. Stephen Porges gives examples of this correlated with animals death fanning or playing dead. Sort of a last ditch effort to get needs met. A state of learned helplessness. We see this playing out in humanity with chronic abuse, poverty or oppression.

Throughout this season, I’ve found myself in all of these states. Momentary waves of feeling social, to stressed, to giving up, to disassociating, to becoming hopeful and energized again. So, now that we have an understanding, a generalized map, to what may be happening physiologically, what can we do to change our state? To create the feeling of safety and support?

I like to break it down in four phases, a generalized feeling state, then practice suggestions  —

Social Security:

Feeling State: Isolated, Lonely, Disconnected

Practice: Ask for help, Give someone a hug, Hold your partners hand, Pet your animal, Call a friend, Maintain eye contact for more than 30 seconds, Spend time PLAYING

Fight:

Feeling State: Stressed, Overwhelm, Anxiety, Aggression, Argumentative

Practice: Prayer, Journal, Mediation, BREATHE, Turn off social media, Slow movement, Heart opening movement, Walk in nature, Acupuncture

Flight:

Feeling State: Looking for exits, Quit, Move, Avoidance

Practice: Sing, Chant, Dance, Laugh, Call a friend, Acupuncture, Journal, Learn something new, Engage in a hobby

Disassociation:

Feeling State: Hopeless, Paralyzed, Over loaded, Empty

Practice: Meditation, Body tapping, Heel tapping, Massage, Strengthen boundaries, Talk therapy, Laughter

Safety and Support. How do you create it in your daily life? How have you been able to find internal safety during this season of life? My prayer is that more of us can live from this place. Making the external place we inhabit safer for expression, for relaxation, for play. And raise the next generation with an understanding of true embodiment.

For the world to live in this body as your home. To live in your body safe and supported. Your body as your vessel. As your own oasis. As your friend.

With love,

Dr. Molly

NATURAL IMMUNITY

What is real immunity? How can we lose the fear? Among this viral epidemic who are the experts searching for safe, non-toxic, sustainable methods to for humanity’s health?

There is a wisdom within your body that joined another cell to create YOU — a living, breathing human and this didn’t happen from any outside help, knowledge, education or synthetic medication. This same intelligence has created for all of us a built in defense mechanism — IMMUNITY.

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost natural by 200%.

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost natural by 200%.

So, HOW DOES OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM WORK?

Our immune systems are sophisticated network of cells, tissues, and organs that work harmoniously to defend the body against foreign invaders. Immune cells communicate when direct physical contact occurs by releasing chemical messengers.

Some of the undercover, but most crucial initial barriers to outside invaders is our skin and digestive and respiratory tracts. Have you ever found yourself wondering what is the point of mucus in your throat? Or hairs in your nose? Or compulsive expelling air from the lungs as known as sneezing?

These mucosal surfaces (nose, mouth, vaginal canal, digestive tract) secrete IgA (a type of immune cell), in response to initial invaders. Beyond the first line of defense, various immune cells (macrophages, B cells, T cells, phagocytes) wait for microbes that might get beyond the surface barriers.

Certain immune cells are triggered to make antibodies. These specialized proteins (antibodies) lock onto specific antigens and STAY in a person's body. That way, if the immune system encounters that specific foreign invader again, the antibodies are INNATELY READY TO RESPOND. Hint: This is why when an individual gets sick with a disease, (cough: chicken pox and many of the viruses we have vaccines for) they are less likely to contract the sickness again.

The immune system is built of multiple layers and has an army of cells ready at all times.

It is crazy to think any of us believe immunity is delivered from the end of a needle or with a pill. We all learn in freshman year biology class that truest immunity is a defense mechanism given to us in the womb, continuing its development throughout our entire lives. And what modern science is providing research for is that immunity encompasses all parts of ourselves - mental, physical, emotional, even spiritual.

What if we switched from focusing on fear of contracting a pathogen, suppression of symptoms, quarantining and sanitizing to the realization that when we have a cut, IT HEALS — by the innate intelligence withIN.

Where have we lost the trust that when our body comes into contact with an outside organism, our bodies are PERFECTLY designed to do a dance with that organism, to learn from the presence of the organism and strengthen my body and immunity from that experience.

This is the magic of life to remember in this time. There is something larger, more potent at work within and around us — trust it.

STRESS

STRESS - something that is more times than not, thought of as a pathology. This buzz word is being used as a cause & determining factor of various diseases. While too much of it can deteriorate our body, has anyone ever mentioned that you may NEED stress?

Living Adjusted Chiropractic - Stress Blog

We're finding out now with new research using Heart Rate Variability that our body thrives on the RIGHT AMOUNT of stress. Positive stress, also known as eustress, is what we subject our bodies to when we are exercising. Humans thrive with challenge, it is one of the ways we allow continued physiologic flexibility, adaptation, growth and ultimately evolution.

What do parkinson’s, heart attack’s and seizures all have in common? The body's inability to adapt to change - too much regularity within the system. So when we aren't stressing our bodies in the right way, the body will respond in decreased efficiency to handle day to day challenges - leading to disease.

The issue we are seeing in today's "go-go-go" society, is that we stay in this stressFULL, hyper-vigilant state all the time. Never giving our body time to recover, rest, balance. This is where Living Adjusted Family Wellness Center is here to help.

Through the chiropractic adjustment we take your over-stressed, hyper-vigilant system and create space for integration. This nervous system focused care can balance the body in a way to be able to better adapt to daily stressors & more efficiently integrate eustress- such as exercise. It is like your "recovery day" on steroids. Here we are simply comparing “eustress” and “distress” not even considering the multiple types of distress our systems are placed under on a daily basis - more to come on that later.

One incredible way to measure the amount of stress your body is placed under is through Heart Rate Variability (HRV). As health care providers, we want to see an increased variability in heart rate, showing that your body is adapting efficiently. When we don’t see much variation (think sedentary lifestyle OR constant high cortisol mediated stress “flight or flight mode”) - again we’re seeing higher incidence of disease (Parkinson’s, heart attacks, Alzheimer’s). This increase in physiological phenomenon of variation for time interval between heartbeats (HRV) essentially allows positive stress to be used effectively.

More research is coming out every day, but Zhang studies have revealed individual's INCREASE in Heart Rate Variability simply by receiving regular CHIROPRACTIC CARE. Dr. Molly did her own little experiment this summer using the Whoop HRV monitor and noticed consistently better recovery scores on weeks where she received chiropractic adjustments. This tool also allowed her to enhance body literacy, knowing the actual amount of strain placed on the body with certain workouts. Surprisingly enough, 45 minutes of snorkeling took the cake for highest strain score (full body workout with restricted breathing & immersed in nature - SCORE) - we could all use more of this added to our weekly regimen.

While all of this is amazing, we don’t need science to reveal to us the impact chiropractic care can have. Many of you reading here, have had an experience with care that cannot be summed up in a blog post or conveyed modern metrics. But every single time we read research on how far reaching clearing the channel of communication between the brain and the body is - ins’t your mind blown? So unbelievably grateful every day to get to work with the most intricate, unknown, dynamic living system - the human body.

Thanks for geeking out with me.

The Stillness

On this season’s lessons

As life has it, God appears in the most unexpected places. The whisper, the stillness. Most of you are rolling your eyes as I type this ocean side in arguably the most extraordinary place in earth. Weeks ago I bought a one way ticket, packed a suitcase and board the plane to Hawaii. The ultimate leap of faith, I thought..

This season’s lesson - finding stillness. I’ve spent days, months, years avoiding the softness of my heart, it’s illumination, the wholeness and goodness that dwells deep within. Why? Because I was convinced once that stillness isn’t enough. I’ve been convinced that God is in the doing, the achieving, the next degree. Spirit works through all things - but I was being spoken to in the silence. He was speaking to me in the waiting. The whispers seemed to drown out the noise the longer I sit. Why did I fight arriving to this place?

Haleakala Crater Sunset

Haleakala Crater Sunset

Maybe it’s a product of the human mind. This week I found myself sitting at a table in a coffee shop on Maui. A story of Elijah in 1 King’s being read from a new friend. Elijah: a faithful servant in the waiting, listening for the next instruction. 1 Kings 19:11 “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.” 12 “ And after the earthquake, a fire, but the Lord was not found in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

God wasn’t speaking through the wind, the earthquake or the fire - he was in the stillness. Elijah was attuned to hear the voice, this whisper. We have the ability to fall into the same state of rest, but this in itself is a leap of faith. To go against the convincing, the doings we’ve thought so strongly would bring us closer to truth, to fulfillment.

Today it is my prayer for you and I to remember this stillness, the softness of our heart, to illuminate our daily doings and make the moments - every single one - sacred. To have faith in the moments of non- doing. To lift up in honor the process of attuning myself to hear this whisper.

The Digital Detox

I was in NYC at a movement class when I heard “You prioritize what you’re connected to.” And it hit me, can you believe we have been tricked into thinking we can experience TRUE connection through a screen? Behind a keyboard?

A few days ago, my friend mentioned a podcast covering ways to incorporate digital detoxing into our lives, the week before that I had heard the quote on connection and purchased a book titled “How to break up with your phone.” Divine timing, I guess. I find it astonishing we’re now needing books, podcasts and other resources to help us with strategies to lessen the amount of time we’re spending online. Heck, it takes a lot of intention and miles of travel to even get away from phone towers and Wi-Fi signal.

taken with my beloved iPhone near Lake Tahoe CA :- )

taken with my beloved iPhone near Lake Tahoe CA :- )

I know I’m not alone in realizing the first thing we do upon waking after turning off the alarm is checking yesterday’s notifications. Or for some, continually checking the phone throughout the night. If we really take time to discover the impact these devices are having on us, it is mind blowing. We’re spending HOURS a day looking at the dang thing. We’re constantly checking it in anticipation for something new, exciting. We’re validating ourselves based on the number of likes a post has. We’re literally allowing our mood to be determined by our phones. If I’m being totally honest, we don’t own a phone – the phones own us. Our phones and social media platforms combined know more about us than our closest relationships… let that one sink in. We’re shaping our identities and emotional intelligence around a platform that literally lets you be WHOEVER you want to be. You can cultivate exactly what your life looks like. And now, we’re numb to it. We are trapped by it.

Nowadays our devices go everywhere with us. Any intimate, alone time I used to have – now my phone joins me. Upon reflection of this I was literally baffled. Using the toilet? Grab my phone. Going to take a bath to relax? Grab my phone. Going to sit down for a sec? Grab my phone. Waiting in line? Grab my phone. Getting in the car? Grab my phone. And the time spent on social media and on my iPhone in general is unproductive – usually a series of minutes passing scrolling, comparing, desiring, judging. My brain was never getting a break!!! The constant checking and mindless scrolling isn’t mindless – it’s using neurologic capacity. We were never created to multitask - we aren’t machines. What drives the nail deeper, is that the more “pick ups” I average, the worse my mood that week. Unreal.

Regardless of what anyone says, we do have a choice. Even if you use your phone for your job, you have a choice!!! App and device developers have sold us the biggest lie. They give you the illusion that you’re in control. They allow you to change certain settings, give feedback or reviews when there is something you’re unsatisfied with and the best part is that most apps are FREE. Who’s actually paying the developers for the app itself? The advertisers. And what do the advertisers get paid off of? Your attention!!! They literally get paid for how many times you click; how much of your time, attention and awareness is given to their product. Waking up to this is the first step. You have a choice.

What’s more are the deepest neurologic effects occurring when we’re on a screen ALL DAY EVERY DAY. Parents know the detriments of this for their children; limiting the time they’re allowed. But next time you’re at a park or the mall pay attention to what the parents are doing – looking down at their phones. It’s a literal addiction. We’re invested physiologically, emotionally and neurologically.

So in my time reflecting these questions came up; why is it so scary (for most of us) to think about unplugging from online platforms? Who will we be without an account online? “ Will I even be relevant?” The one that truly changed things for me, is if I want to work to be known or be worth knowing?

Now that iPhone’s have the screen time tracking application, it’s hard to ignore the amount of time you’re spending picking that thing up or looking at it. What if we began using it like a tool again, the original use for the device – to be a resource, for life’s convenience. Starting this week, I’m focusing on the balance of using the device, staying connected, but actually LIVING outside of the virtual reality. Taking a vow to keep the social media apps deleted off my phone and only using a browser when I want to check them, going to seriously utilize the screen time application – when I’ve met my limit, I’ve met my limit no more being reminded in 15 more minutes. I also want to incorporate digital detoxes 1-2x a month. A full 48 hours PHONE OFF – just scheduled it on my calendar.

“You prioritize what you’re connected to.” Lets reconnect with ourselves and those around us. Let’s reconnect with our boundaries, emotional health, mental health, our CREATOR, his creation and no longer live this life like a technology zombie. Who’s with me?!

Why I Stopped Wearing Makeup

Have you ever paid attention to all of the masks you place on each day? I spent an entire day writing down ways in which I act or things I do to cover the insecurities I'm carrying. For most (females), we wake up, (check our phones) get "ready" for the day and rush out the door. The amount of things that "getting ready entails" is actually quite insane. We'll put on our makeup because that one time so and so told us we look tired without mascara. We'll spend a half hour obsessing about how our hair looks, but we make sure to style it in a way that makes it look like we didn't try too hard. We tweeze our perfectly shaped eyebrows, maybe add some tint because the sun has really lighted the shade lately. We put deodorant on our freshly shaved armpits then add a couple squirts of perfume because God-forbid we sweat and our one layer of deodorant isn't enough to cover the natural smell our body is excreting (formerly known as B.O.). Have I nailed down your exact morning routine yet?

What I found halfway through the first year in chiropractic school was that over time the coat of foundation I was applying got thicker and thicker. Since high school I had become less okay with the skin I had been granted. I could always use more bronzer, darker eyes, better shaped eyebrows or pinker cheeks. These layers pile on. The worse I felt about myself, the more coats of mascara I applied. The more engrossed in social media I became, the more I obsessed about editing out the zit that couldn't be covered up. Recently, I remembered something that I had long forgotten - being 12 years old wanting to wear makeup and my mom gently saying "you're too beautiful for makeup." Thankfully, years later, insert the intervention of ideas on holistic living and the above, down, inside, out principle. And with help of a few people that have been major influences in the creation of the human I am today, I started questioning my reasons for "putting on the mask" each morning. When I looked in the mirror, why did I think I had to cover anything up? Why did I think I had to "make myself presentable" for anyone? And what did "being presentable" even mean? Was it for me or was it for what I wanted people to think of me?

The thing I often hear girls say, "Well you look good without makeup, I could never do that." YES YOU CAN. Or my favorite "you have freckles to cover everything up." Well here it is ladies, you would look "good" without it too if you gave it a try. "Good" is literally a matter of perception. It changes based on the persons reality - their past experiences and current belief systems. As a reminder, a few things that only matter to you: the tone of your skin, the amount of freckles you have, the lightness of your eyebrows, the shape of your face, the amount of blemishes. My question for you; if you're in love with the way you look, why cover it up? What does it mean to "put on your face?" Why can't the unbelievably gorgeous face God intricately designed for you be enough? Go two days to work without makeup. Do it. Own it. And start loving yourself - all of yourself.

Have to mention, there are some practical reasons I stopped wearing make up too.. Honestly, all of the questioning and falling back in love with "my natural look" happened upon uncovering the truth about the health products we're sold in America. Fun fact: our skin is our largest organ!!! Until I read this statistic in relation to the amount of toxins in normal care products - it didn't sink in. But now I pay attention to what goes on my skin, the quality of clothes I'm buying, the soap in public restrooms, the type of dish soap I use etc. every ounce of what we put in our body and on every inch of our skin is absorbed. Did y'all know the US only has bans on 11 cosmetic ingredients? In places like Europe they ban over 1,300 ingredients. The manufacturers are required to uphold higher safety and efficacy standards.

My first few months I spent diving into this, I utilized the "Think Dirty" app. It rates products on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 having the lowest toxicity rating and 10 being the highest, all while listing ingredients and reasoning for the rating. While I have almost completely used and replaced my products with non-toxic alternatives, I have found myself just simply using less. We are sold a lie that to be this or be that we NEED this facewash, or we NEED this foundation or the (insert whatever). No, no, no you don't. (This is a reminder for myself too). Most of us could actually get away with eating clean, exfoliating our faces a couple times a week, washing with water, removing any natural makeup with coconut oil and a gentle wash cloth. It's a paradigm shift, but a healthier less expensive route. All this to suggest simply paying attention to the ingredients listed in the products you consume daily - if you can't pronounce the word, it can generally be categorized as a synthesized chemical compound of some sort. Find products with words you can pronounce, with plants you've heard of, with companies that create, manufacture and market with ALL OF YOU in mind.

None of this means you can't live. Yes, I find myself washing my hands with the soap provided in public places or using normal shampoo when I've forgotten to plan ahead or wanting to put on make up for a special event. But being a conscious consumer, we can decrease the toxic load our bodies and environment process on a daily basis. This is no different than anything, too much can consume you. Too much can actually change the way you see yourself. Too much can make you lose sight of the meaning behind it. Choosing to drop the masks is a daily decision. It is a path. Dedicate yourself to identifying where you put on masks and then choose one. Begin there. Then celebrate the freedom that lies beyond this change.

To My Future Community...

With graduation just around the corner, I’ve been thinking, praying, journaling and having tough conversations about what life looks like come summertime. I still don’t know where God has me, but sure know how I want those coming to get adjusted to feel; a letter to my future community..

Hi there! We are so grateful to have you here!

We are in the business of helping our community rediscover the power withIN. We whole heartedly believe each individual was fearfully and wonderfully created. But as we’ve all experienced - life happens, change occurs, we’re hurt and symptoms arise. As we were inherently designed to integrate these experiences, often this stress overloads our capacity to adapt to these events. This is where [practice name] comes in to serve you.

We believe in supporting and empowering our community in the healing process, beginning with the understanding that the body is a self restoring, self regulating organism. The chiropractic adjustment is utilized to begin the healing process – liberating the potential stored within your body. When this occurs, normal body physiology ensues, just the way the way we were created. We are often asked, “who can benefit from receiving adjustments?” At [practice name], we serve all ages and walks of life…from newborns to their grandparents. But as educated and trained prenatal and pediatric wellness experts, we especially welcome moms and young children to enjoy a beautiful and natural way to find their highest expression of life and well-being. The job of caring for someone’s health is not taken lightly, so your concerns and questions are always welcomed here.

We value integrity, community and living our lives from above, down, inside, out. Our job is not to discover what is wrong with you, but remind you of everything that is RIGHT with you. We are on a full time mission here in the Dallas area and want to welcome you as one of our own. We invite you to spend time in our office, get to know the staff, share stories, take photos, make this place your home.

Our space is your space. We look forward to serving you. We look forward to doing life with you!

Welcome home.

Uncovering the Divine Feminine

I was honored to be asked by my dear friend Molly to write a blog post for her pride and joy Living Adjusted. However, I expressed my difficulties in choosing a topic. After some thought, she suggested that I write about the Divine Feminine. To which I replied something like, “What do I know about the Divine Feminine?” 😊 It is so funny how quick we are to renounce our gifts and find difficulty in understanding what others can so clearly see from the exterior. I am by no means an expert – I have many teachers that understand the Divine qualities and duality of life much better than I can probably ever express. However, I hope you find this post both enlightening and empowering.

It is valuable to first talk about the WHOLE. The ALL. The power the orchestrates and organizes our lives so beautifully. Chiropractors may call this Universal Intelligence. Religion calls it God. Spiritualists use terms such as One, Totality, the Infinite and Incorruptible Source. The list goes on and on.

When we make the decision to come into this earthly dimension, we commonly forget about our origins. We are birthed into these physical bodies and begin to associate “I” with the physical body. Our identity becomes so intimately intertwined with our body and this physical existence. We may begin to feel separate and incomplete. We may even forget that there is a SOUL inside these large, complex and amazing sensory organs we use to walk the Earth. We forget that we are SPIRITUAL BEINGS having a PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE.

corey adjusting.PNG

If you draw a bucket of water from the ocean, is it still the ocean?

Likewise, the information contained in THE WHOLE, THE ALL is also within every single one of US. We have genius within us. Innate knowledge and wisdom that is unparalleled. It also goes by many names – Innate Intelligence, Holy Spirit, Soul… Totality is somewhere deep within us. However, we have forgotten and then it has been covered by layers and layers of “stuff.” Stuff meaning our belief systems, our conditioning, our environment. The agreements we have made with the external world – I am this or that. The labels that limit us from understanding our true and unlimited potential. Don’t be confused. I do not believe I AM GOD, but I definitely KNOW that I am OF God. We are on a Path. A path of remembrance. A path of empowerment and connection to that bigger thing that knows and rules all. The moment we realize we are truly made of that very same Intelligence, is the same moment we become free.

A totality within us means we have an equal balance of both masculine and feminine qualities. No matter the gender, we contain Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine. However, the expression of these qualities commonly lies in favor of the Masculine. So much so, we have become unbalanced and sick. We live in a time and culture dominated by patriarchy and an overabundance of masculine qualities. Life is full of aggression, domination and ego. Life can even appear scary and evil. We have acts of hate, violence and natural disasters happening in the world around us every day. Mother Nature is literally kicking and screaming, knocking at our door – hoping that we can find balance before it’s too late. Where has the Divine Feminine gone? Have we forgotten her completely? How do we begin to restore balance?

The MICROCOSM always depicts the MACROCOSM. What we see at an individual level we see at the whole. Truly, the problems of the world are not OUT THERE. They are within.

If you want to awaken all of humanity, then awake all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the World, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.
— Lao Tzu

It starts with us. Man or woman, it begins with tapping into our femininity – our gentleness, our nurturing nature and our intuitiveness. Our power of manifestation and creation; birthing new life into this seemingly dying world. We all find our inner Goddess, Queen, Priestess, Warrioress, Lover and Wise Woman. We bring light and we become balanced. And in return, the WORLD becomes more BALANCED.

I look around and see so many people declare, “I want to change the world!” Although this is noble, we must start with self. It must start with deep introspection into what and who we really are. If we are truly OF GOD what is there to fix? Or must we just remember? Changing and or saving the world is a mighty heavy burden to place on oneself. I am here to declare that we must simply save ourselves. We connect again and again to the BIGGER SOMETHING and allow IT to carry the burden. Allow IT to work through us. We become the instrument of God. The hollow bone, so to speak. And as we remember who we are and return to our truth, living life in BALANCE, we influence others along the way. We become the out-stretched hand. We become the lighthouse. The power working through us becomes so self-evident others can’t help but be pulled onto the Path as well.

If you want to become whole, Let yourself be partial. If you want to become straight, Let yourself be crooked. If you want to become full, Let yourself be empty. If you want to be reborn, Let yourself die. If you want to be given everything, Give everything up.

Are Your Hormones Friends or Foes?

Introducing to the Living Adjusted blog, Midwife and Birth Kween, Karly Nuttall. This rock star lady is giving women everywhere the dirt on all things menstrual health, hormones, birth, fertility and more! I have completely fallen in love with listening to her weekly podcast with co-host, Ali Feroah. Want in on the content their providing? Check it out here: http://www.karlynuttall.com/birth-kweens-podcast/

I couldn't be more excited to share Karly's thoughts on women's hormones, our cycles and if you're a candidate to have your hormones tested!! Let us know what y'all think in the comments below.

Are your hormones friends or foes?

Whether your hormones are life giving or life sucking depends on if they are natural or synthetic and if they are floating around at that goldilocks-and-the-three-bears sweet spot: just right.

Shockingly few women understand their hormone cycles and I don’t blame them, it’s not something that American culture makes out to be an important bit of information. The more common narrative is that if you have a “problem” with your cycle the Pill will “cure” it by “regulating your period”. That’s a lot of air quotes, or in other words, a lot of B.S.

KarlyNutall BirthKween

There are two very VERY important things that women should know about periods and hormonal contraception.

The first is that your cycle is considered your 5th vital sign, an indicator of health just like blood pressure or your pulse. In other words it is sending you important messages! For example, periods that are more than 30 days apart could mean you’re high in testosterone, a period less than 26 days apart may mean you’re deficient in progesterone, a very heavy, painful period with clots could mean high estrogen. Beyond just affecting your menses, these sex hormones can influence everything else in your life because YOUR CYCLE AFFECTS MORE THAN YOUR ABILITY TO CONCEIVE! When produced at healthy levels throughout the month, these crucial sex hormones positively affect your mood, brain function, energy, muscle mass, sex drive, digestion, sleep, youthful appearance, vaginal lubrication, etc… but when imbalanced, deficient or high, these hormones can make you and your moon time feel terrible.

Number 2: What most women don’t realize about hormonal birth control is that it shuts down ovulation and therefore shuts down your body’s production of sex hormones. Peeps! This means that hormonal birth control does not mimic pregnancy, it mimics MENOPAUSE and at least some of those effects can be long lasting. It also means that you’re not having an actual period, you’re having a “withdrawal bleed” and therefore can’t determine much of anything from  your monthly cycle because you’re not having one.  The hormones in the pill, mirena, patch, etc…are not natural and do not interact in your body the same way the hormones your ovaries and adrenal glands make and are in no way a cure for gynecological issues, they are just bandaids. Sometimes very welcomed and necessary bandaids, but bandaids nonetheless.

All this is to say: if you are struggling with your period, if you know you have hormonal imbalances from PCOS, endometriosis or an unknown reason, before reaching for the pill, there are ways to find out what your body is telling you! I believe 100% in hormone testing and I’ll tell you why: it’s impossible to guess which hormones are at a healthy level and which ones are off. I’ve been surprised more than once when I’ve received a client’s sex hormone test results! Furthermore, many women at a loss of what else to do go to the health food store and start buying supplements that lower or raise the estrogen or progesterone only to test later and find out that herb was totally wrong for their needs. So don’t guess, TEST!

A little bit about hormone testing: when testing sex hormones and/or cortisol (too much cortisol depletes your hormones over time and you may need to repair your adrenals along with your sex hormones) it’s best to use a spit or urine test. This, rather than blood levels, shows what is actually free, unbound and available for use in the body! You can usually get tests like this from people like me who are Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners or through a Naturopath or Functional Medicine Doctor. It’s really helpful to have someone trained looking at your results and recommending what to take because it takes the guesswork out of it and puts you on the right track from the start. They can tell you what you need to take and for how long and when you should expect to see results.

Once you get your test results you’ll have options beyond just hormone replacement therapy. While that may be necessary for some, hormone replacement doesn’t coach your endocrine system back into producing a healthy amount of hormones itself, and that is the goal! Any of the abovementioned practitioners can help you with diet and lifestyle changes (hint: blood sugar balance helps EVERYTHING), nutritional supplements and botanical treatments for repairing your adrenals, ovaries, heart and soul!

Strength and Conditioning as a female

Introducing to the Living Adjusted blog, Colleen Flaherty; a strength and conditioning coach, owner of Prokreate strength programming and over all bad ass boss babe! There are so many mixed messages floating around about lifting weights as females, so I thought I'd let y'all hear it first from the best. Colleen works with women, often in the prenatal, postpartum and motherhood transition periods. This was an educational, inspirational and overall eye-opening piece for me. Let us know what you think below!!

Physical strength as a precursor for strength in all the other ways women have to be strong

What’s the “life hack” or secret that many high performing people do that you can do too? They know that the simplest way to access power is to challenge your physical self in a positive way. I’m talking about the activities where you feel better during and after them and they weren’t particularly easy to finish. Physically manifesting your power translates into an attitude and feeling that seep into everything else you do in your day. A challenging workout gives you a type of high where you feel like you can conquer the world. Sounds like something we can all use a bit more of, right?

What many movers, exercisers, and athletes understand, is that the movement we participate in shapes how we perceive the world, outside the fitness activities. We conquer challenges with a unique perspective, perhaps reminding ourselves that, if we can deadlift 200lbs, we can also champion the assignment tasked to us by ourselves or our bosses!

So how can a woman be strong in all the ways required in this modern age? To feel successful, joyful, feminine, or purposeful? Simply, by strength and conditioning. Not necessarily in the cultish ways we’ve seen in some organizations. Not in the High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Not through only attending bootcamps. And no, I do not mean the body-shaming cultural perception of health and fitness. The 6 minute abs or camera angles that make anyone look skinny. That perception is quite distorted and serves more harm than good to our emotional and mental states.

Colleen F Prokreate

In general, the exercise I’m talking about is one that serves your body’s unique needs, weaknesses, and strengths. Not just a session you get with a franchised or globo gym. I’m talking about teaming up with a coach that TRULY takes into consideration what you do every day, your mindset, your nutrition, your self-care, and what your goals are for life longevity. These approaches carry a different energy then the, “I want to lose 20 pounds” mentality.

Physically strengthening the body through lifting heavy-for-you weight, challenges the preconceived concepts or beliefs we have about our abilities. Through exercise, we bust limiting self-beliefs! Think about it, if you bust beliefs for 45 minutes in the gym, imagine how you would think about all that you are capable for the other 12-16 hours of your day!

Not only that, lifting weight:

  • Boosts immunity
  • Improves cognitive abilities
  • Increased energy
  • Better sleep
  • Healthier DNA (the stuff your babies get!)
  • Reduces risk of disease

Not to mention, lifting weight increases bone density which lowers our risk of osteoporosis in later years and the breaking of bones from falls!

On the topic of resiliency, subjecting yourself to appropriate physical and mental bouts of challenge (Read, a variety of activity in your week like: 3-4 days of weight lifting, 1-2 days of active recovery, 1-2 days of tai chi, yoga, or pilates, 1-2 days of self -care like chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, craniosacral, etc.) teaches your nervous system and subconscious how to handle stress. So when faced with situations, your body smoothly navigates the obstacle instead of going into fight/flight/pass out mode. Have you ever experienced a situation where you “froze up” or walked/ran away in fear? That’s your nervous system! Through your exercise routine, you can actually teach your body to react differently in stressful situations! One where you can breathe, have confidence, and think clearly when the going gets tough!

Hesitant about lifting weights?

I get a little feminist on this topic because there is so much about our culture that tells women we are supposed to be inferior or weak. Fuck that noise. Our bodies create life. We are magic, powerful, and wise. Many of us need permission to fully step into our power but step one is realizing, through and through, that You! Are! Powerful!

This wraps into lifting heavy weight and strength training because it’s been an activity reserved for athletes or the dedicated few solely because not enough trainers knew how to train women. It’s still not hugely widespread but things have evolved dramatically in the past 20 years and most women should be able to find a place to lift weights with a knowledgeable coach.

Also, on the subject of getting “bulky”, all I have to say is this: look at your grandmothers, great aunts, or any typical woman over the age of 70. Most have problems walking, standing upright, or getting out of a chair. This is due to the lack of strength and coordination of their muscles, a cease in physical activity/challenge, and a mindset that when you “get old” you sit around a lot more. It’s all bull poop! If you want to watch sunsets, meet friends, have your wits about you, and make decisions for yourself when you are deemed “elderly”, then continue to lift weights all through your years. YES, of course your routine will change as you age. That’s the beauty of weight lifting, it’s adaptable to any ANY BODY. It’s glorious! Take away message, build your muscles while you’re young, so they serve you when you’re old.

Pregnancy & Postpartum Exercise

First, a pregnant body has athletic adaptations that professional athletes do illegal things for. FACT. We’re finding this boost in athleticism during pregnancy is being pushed down, even negated, by those who aren’t educated on the actual physiological changes. Yes, you can lift more than 20lbs. Yes, you can run. Yes, you lift heavy. But these all depend on form, trunk stabilization, breathing, and programming as a whole. Those things complicate this picture a little, but nothing above what anyone can learn!

Every woman should begin strength training before conception. The things lifting weights does for your insides, cycle, and fertility is miraculous and lays a solid foundation for the changes pregnancy brings. If you want to start lifting in pregnancy, great! Find a coach that understands the changes of pregnancy and postpartum and has a passion for training women. You need them to help guide you through exercises to make sure your form is impeccable. DO NOT rely on pregnancy DVDs or videos if you are a novice, hell even experienced, hire a professional to guide you!!!

There are so many aspects of pregnancy and postpartum strength training that anyone who advertises “it’s as simple as doing more kegels” or “get back your abs with 7 minutes of these exercises” is full of poop. A knowledgeable professional will take a whole body, whole system, spiritual, physical, mental, emotional approach with you. Your body is a temple and every person you trust with it should make you feel safe, heard, and excited.

Molly asked me to finish out this piece on why strength and conditioning is so near and dear to my heart and how it’s influenced who I show up in this world as. I’ll share the shortest version possible!

I started lifting weights when I was 14. Something about it drew me in and I absolutely LOVED being in the gym. The atmosphere, the feeling I felt while exercising, but also the results of my efforts. I was a hella fast, decent, soccer player and my 14 year old self felt confident.

And because of this lifestyle, it was my downfall. I tore both my ACLs at 16 and 17 playing soccer. The second 3 months after my return from the first. My body “failed me”. I went through many months of physical therapy and the experience of not having a body that fully functions without aches and uncertainties. I don’t play competitive soccer anymore, the thing that makes my spirit come alive, because I choose knees that work as I grow older.

At 16, I became a certified soccer coach because I could not play. I’ve been coaching ever since! I found a passion of helping girl friends workout by having them join me in the gym. Then I found a pregnancy exercise book in the library after I decided to become a certified personal trainer and fell head over heels in LOVE with prenatal and postnatal exercise. Through these dark experiences, the right and left turns, the learning, the tripping, the knowledge gained from suffering, and the fact that training the body isn’t just ALL about the body; I am here today because of my continuous dedication to self evolution and my approach to body/mind/spirit strength and conditioning.

Cycles, periods, and the Art of Chinese Medicine

For those of you who do not know me I am an acupuncturist who specializes in women’s health and infertility. I’ve been studying Chinese medicine and acupuncture for over 14 years, 10 of which I’ve been in practice. Early on in my studies I landed an internship with the largest (at the time) acupuncture fertility clinic in Texas. It was here that my passion for nutrition, healthy living, and hormones took root and blossomed! Now living in Dallas, I own The Acupuncture Juncture, serving couples and supporting them with Chinese medicine and acupuncture to help them achieve their dreams of becoming parents and to live healthier lives.

Meeting Molly Stiens and some of the other amazing chiros coming out of Parker College, I was inspired by their talent and passion to help their community and am truly honored that Molly asked me to write this guest blog post.

So now that you know a little about me and where I come from let us dive a little deeper into Chinese medicine and how we approach the menstrual cycle, particularly the phase in which we make the shift to begin anew – our menses.

Everything in nature moves in cycles – we are divinely connected to mother earth and all her beautiful gifts.

The basis of Chinese Medicine, yin and yang, is rooted in the respect and observation of the cycles of nature and the flow of life and the human body. Similar to the cycles we see daily, sunrise to sunset, the ebb and flow of the tide, and our seasonal changes; our menstrual cycles are rooted in these patterns and mimic then accordingly when we are healthy. These cycle patterns affect everything in nature and the rules apply to and affect everything and every being on this planet. There is without doubt a rhythm and circulation to everything in life. By understanding this concept and the power we each possess we are able to effect great change both as the practitioner and as the patient.

Applying the concept of yin and yang to our menstrual cycle we can find patterns of disease and better understand how these particular patterns correlate and disrupt our natural flow of hormones..

In Chinese medicine our view of the blood is similar to that in Western medicine – transportation and regulation. However, we take it a little further in than we understand that our blood, in this case, a women’s menses, can provide clues to internal health and hormonal balance. We look closely and the color of our menstrual period, the viscosity, and the volume along with any premenstrual patterns that show up.

A healthy period – the beginning of a cycle. First and foremost let’s all get on the same page of understanding the difference between our cycle and our period. Our cycles begin from the first day of menstrual flow, called cycle day one, and they end the day before your next full day of menstrual flow. For most women this is a length of 28 days. Our periods are the time in which our uterine lining is shedding and we see bleeding.  A healthy period flow is 3 – 5 days, with a moderate volume that begins bright red and without spotting or clotting. I measure a moderate flow as soaking your pad or tampon every 4 hours. Our periods should also be free of any premenstrual symptoms such as cramping, mood swings, and changes in our stools; these signs can signify a hormonal imbalance and possibly lead to difficulty conceiving in some cases.  Our period is a time of cleansing and a time to reset.  Working out or sex is not usually advised during the first few days of our flow so as to not deplete ourselves but better yet to rejuvenate through nutrient dense foods,  meditation, and rest.

No PMS! Really?? Yes! Most of my clients experience a huge reduction in their premenstrual symptoms including cramping, mood swings, and fatigue. These conditions are considered pathological, especially in my patient clientele, and must be corrected to achieve healthy hormonal balance and future pregnancy.

PMS, especially moderate to severe symptoms, ARE NOT NORMAL. They are however, very common and so we’ve come to accept them as the norm but what we’ve failed to realize is that these symptoms are our body’s signaling of improper hormone function and can in most cases be corrected. Cramping, bloating, irritability, etc. are usually considered an issue with the free flow of qi (pronounced “chee”)and blood. Which means your energy is disrupted and something is stuck and your uterus is yelling out to you to pay attention. In Western terms, this could be poor signaling from the pituitary or hypothalamus causing poor corpus luteum development and consequently insufficiency of progesterone output in our luteal phase. This is just one common pattern that I see clinically.

Clotting can also be a considerable issue for some women, causing disruptions and stress in their daily lives. In Chinese medicine, clotting is an issue of poor blood circulation and has to do with the communication between the uterus and the liver. The liver, in Chinese medicine, is the regulator. It carries out the instructions of body functions like our monthly cycle. When the liver is unhappy due to diet, lifestyle, or emotional turmoil we begin to see disruptions in this function. Typically, women will experience heavier flow with the clotting, accompanied by uterine and/or lower back cramping. The heavier flow and uterine cramps are the body’s way of flushing out to try and cleanse this organ however if the root cause of the clotting (liver health) is not addressed then this cycle continues and often becomes worse over time.

Keep in mind, everyone’s experience, diagnosis, and treatment is unique to their individual needs and to their root cause. Find yourself an amazing acupuncturist to help you determine what may be going on and who can support you to better hormonal health through non hormonal therapies.

Restoring the body back into hormonal alignment with this powerful ancient medicine we can help women feel happier, feel more balance, and improve fertile health.

Peace, love, and cheers my good friends!
