Mastery to Mystery

Chiropractors: Unlocking the Mastery Mystery

There’s a movement within the world, within the healing arts, namely within the chiropractic profession. Maybe it’s something that has always been present, and just recently revealing itself in its fullest vulnerability. An opportunity, really. A chance to eliminate hypocrisy. To step into all that our founders called us to be.

From the seat I’ve assumed, relatively new to the indoctrination of the chiropractic philosophy, art and science, the last year and a half served as a sort of elimination. An unlearning you could say, from the systemic forces at play. On a microscopic and macroscopic level. And a  “weeding out” is occurring, of those that fully trust in that tiny rivulet of force that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells and stirs them into life. That theology that BJ so beautiful articulated.

There is talk in the Palmer’s writings of which master we will serve. “You cannot serve two masters.” These recent seasons serving as a front row seat, bearing witness to where our ultimate servitude lies. Within the intricacies of the human design? Within the foundational concepts from which chiropractic was birthed from? Or within the policies of protection? The governance? With technology or humanness? Within a mask mandate or a vaccination?

If we truly study the roots of our profession, the first bearded men gifted us this “thing” to uncover the mysteries of life. Not to master things — viruses, professions, concepts, origins of dis-ease. Rather reflect on the origins. Piecing together the threads woven through history, throughout our DNA. Finding their connection. Embodying this connection.

As a whole, the chiropractic profession has turned towards this desire to conquer subluxation, to discover the mastery of the adjusting art, to expand our reach beyond the 1% of the population that receives care.

How could we serve the world if we simply dropped that? Turned back to the mystery of the tiny rivulet of information that animates the living world. What if we chose to sit with the intelligence. Choose to honor that intelligence? Would your practice look different? How would the application of the adjusting change? What shift would happen internally, if we chose to sit with the mystery, instead of master the majority?

There’s a new trend in chiropractic claiming to be “holistic,” but still we witness the use of hand sanitizer and masks to make people feel comfortable. In the past I may have thought, it will take a strong individual to stand with roots that grow deep amongst trees that appear tall with limbs that are blown and tossed by the wind. But after witnessing this recent season of pandemonium, I operate within the framework that it will take a CLEAR individual. A tree that knows the foundational elements, the root system, is what sustains.

Regardless of where your loyalty has been laid, my hope is that this serves not as a judgment, merely a point of reflection. A prompt, an enticement, to clear out concepts that may be hidden within the trunk you’ve shoved in the basement. An opportunity to lean into the mystery instead of playing into the egoic mastery.  A chance to pause and ask “Do I have the clarity required to guard the sacred trust DD so diligently gifted me?”

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” I’ll take this “pandemic time” as the beginning of a massive teaching thread. Moving our communities from looking outside of ourselves to reflecting within. From seeking knowledge to wisdom. From a reaching for curing to a desire for caring. From mastery to mystery.
