Hey fellow mamas on the sweet journey of nurturing the beginnings our little ones’ lives, here are a few practices we often suggest to client at Living Adjusted. These holistic practices to bring home movement, loving touch, and embrace nature & the environment around us.
Encourage Movement: Liberate your babies from containers and cribs. Embrace the freedom of the ground space—whether it’s a cozy corner in the kitchen or near the bed. Allow your baby to explore, roll, and wiggle freely. Remember, every roll, every breath is a neurological symphony for them. We’ve introduced a sheepskin for our baby—a soft space where he can engage with us at his level, allowing a continuous dance of movement as we carry on with our chores or tasks. Or engage in consistent baby wearing. When they're your body, soaking in the world, they absorb every single one of our movements. This is the perfect way for their brain to bring in proprioceptive information about where they are in time and space. Your breath is synchronizing. There’s temperature regulation. The benefits are endless.
Hands-On Engagement: The caregiver’s touch is massively therapeutic. More healing that anyone else’s hands on your baby. When we’re at home with our little one, I’m constantly moving his body, noticing where he’s moving or not moving, holding him and informing his tissues. We invite mamas to feel for any tensions or constraints; gently massage and soothe those areas. Observe how they use their limbs, move their head, or even breathe. Babies are mirrors—they reflect our movements, thoughts, and even speech cadence. As mamas, we set their landscape. We set the tone of our environment for the whole. By tuning in to their movements, we often become more aware of our own.
Embrace Sunlight: Sunshine is not just warmth; it’s a vital component for growth. The impact to of the sun is becoming more available due to the increase in interest in quantum biology. We can think of our babies similar to plants, needing the earth and sky to flourish. So step outside! Often! Cold climates, too, offer benefits when we learn to harness their potential for our mitochondrial health. Make nature a part of your daily routine. Begin orienting your days around your time in nature or outside. It’s like a massive charge for our body’s batteries, continuing the “opening work” that has happened beneath the hands of your bodyworker.
Our babies are sponges, absorbing not just breastmilk and love, but also our movements, environment, and connection with nature. To continue assisting our babies in their creation of space, make their home an environment that fosters growth, movement, and an embrace of the nature. Here’s to nurturing our little ones the ways our ancestors did.
